Tonda di Giffoni
Tonda di Giffoni is an Italian variety of ancient origin, grown in the province of Salerno (near Naples). The tree is tall, medium-sized.
The husk is slightly longer than the nut; many nuts fall in the husk.
Tonda di Giffoni is resistant to a bacterial burn and is only slightly susceptible to a kidney tick. Female flowering and dusting - the middle of the season.
The Tonda di Giffoni variety is very early and productive. The medium-sized nuts are round, brown with a distinct stripe and have very pronounced grooves on the sides, giving 44 - 47% of the kernel. The kernels are round, often corrugated and may have light fiber. They blanch very well.
Tonda di Giffoni is well established in most areas of New Zealand, but has problems with high mold levels in most gardens. It has relatively low cold requirements for female and vegetative buds and may be suitable for areas with mild winters in the drier areas of New Zealand.
The kernel is round, medium in size (1.2 g), walnut mass 2.50 g, high kernel yield (46%).
Productivity is constant, high: 3-3.5 t / ha. Nuts ripen in early September.
Suitable pollinators are: Tonda Gentile Romana, Camponica, San Giovanni, Mortarella.
